As befits the Fairy-Tale Trails series, after seven years of research and exploring Slovenia’s neighbouring countries, Irene Cerar’s fourth book of fairy-tale trails has now been published.
After Fairy-Tale Trails of Slovenia, Fairy-Tale Trails Through History and Kamnik Fairy-Tale Trails, Fairy-Tale Trails Without Borders is undoubtedly the biggest undertaking yet, both for the author and for everyone else involved.
It is probably the most comprehensive guide to excursions in Slovenia’s neighbouring countries, richly illustrated with photographs that show the full beauty and diversity of the landscapes beyond the border. Bilingual maps showing the routes of the excursions described make the book easier to follow and help readers find their way.
The book describes 50 excursions, starting at the Gulf of Trieste and continuing through the Karst, Resia, the Natisone, Torre and Canal valleys, into Carinthia and along the Karavanke range to Styria, the Rába Valley and the regions along the Mura. Borderland excursions in Croatia and Istria, where the author sought out and found especially rich intercultural connections, complete the series of destinations along our border.
The book follows the tried-and-tested format of the Fairy-Tale Trails series and also presents 52 folk tales and stories connected with the places described. The stories are illustrated by acclaimed Slovenian artists from different generations: Marta Bartolj, Nenad Cizl, Bojana Dimitrovski, Milan Erič, Jelka Godec Schmidt and Peter Škerl.
A carefully considered selection of destinations, presented for both knowledgeable readers and the general public, folk tales and stories, and outstanding illustrations and photographs make this book far more than a classic family excursion guide.
It is much more than that: a travelogue and literary journey through the Slovenian borderlands, which are unfortunately still too little known among Slovenes in Slovenia, and through the natural and cultural heritage beyond the border—places we can comfortably visit on our own or with children.
