Along the route of the old railway from Trieste to Poreč.
Parenzana, Porečanka or Istranka are just some of the names of the former narrow-gauge railway that operated between Trieste and Poreč from 1902 to 1935.
In 2008, this varied 123 km route was restored and opened to cyclists and walkers. This gave us one of the most attractive cycling routes in Europe, distinguished by its remarkable story and stunningly beautiful scenery. Cycling past old railway stations, through tunnels and over viaducts is the perfect finishing touch to this route, which is well worth visiting.
Parenzana, which passes through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, was cycled and documented by Dr Janko Ferk from Klagenfurt. An expert on and scholar of the Habsburg monarchy, he has added a rich historical overview of the construction and events surrounding the famous Istrian railway to his detailed cycling description of the route.
The route can also be tackled as a sporting challenge and ridden in one go, but Istria, with its picturesque villages and stone-built towns, the interplay of three cultures, the proximity of the sea and the Mediterranean landscape, invites you to embark on a multi-day cycling tour.
The book is richly illustrated with photographs and archival images of the old railway line and the places around it.
