The third, expanded and updated edition of the first Slovenian selective guidebook to the Western Julian Alps. The author, Andrej Mašera, is one of the foremost experts on these mountains, and his 1998 guidebook has seen several reprints and an Italian-language edition.
What’s new? The author has updated the guide to reflect changes in recent years and added 10 new destinations, bringing the total to 60 “best” tours that these mountains have to offer visitors. The book is published in a larger format with a redesigned layout, and even more space is devoted to photography—which one of the most beautiful parts of the Julian Alps undoubtedly deserves.
With his encyclopaedic knowledge and understanding of mountain history, Andrej Mašera has also won over Italian readers: the book has become a definitive guide for mountain lovers on both sides of the border. The Western Julian Alps are home to Friulians, Italians, Slovenes and Austrians, and were the setting for major military events during the First World War and rivalries between these nations for mountaineering and climbing supremacy. Thanks to the author’s in-depth knowledge, this guide is much more than a dry description of routes. It is a comprehensive work that also offers readers a broader and deeper perspective on these “magnificently beautiful mountains”, as Tine Mihelič described them. The Italian guidebook has also sold out, and an Italian reprint is in preparation.
The routes range in difficulty from pleasant Sunday walks to very demanding via ferratas and strenuous linking trails. The book also describes a number of easier climbing routes, which non-climbers can undertake only when accompanied by a mountaineer or mountain guide.
