The development of the Power Cranks power meter began with our Human Performance Team, which observed cyclists in real-world riding conditions. Historically, power meters have been validated in two ways—the first by measuring the torque produced under a static, linear load applied to the crank arm or chain, and the second by using a motor to turn a bicycle’s pedals. However, cycling is neither static nor linear, and people apply power quite differently from a machine. In the end, we found that neither of these methods answered questions about accuracy in the “real world”.

To achieve the greatest accuracy, we built our own cycling trainer, WinMill, to measure actual power output. This measurement allows us to assess accuracy in all riding conditions—seated and standing, at different power levels and cadences, with different weights and an infinite number of gear ratios. Our data collection process is the standard we use for power meters, and through our own testing and external validation by the Locomotion laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, Power Cranks have proven to be the most accurate in real-world scenarios (+/- 1.5%).

Using the Power Cranks power meter is easy, as it features industry-leading temperature compensation software and is water-resistant. Calibration is only needed during seasonal temperature changes, and replacing the battery is simple with the included tool.
