Casing density is measured in TPI – “threads per inch”. The closest equivalent is “threads per square centimetre”: the number of threads in the tyre casing per unit of area. The casing is the heart of the tyre/tubular and is made from various rubber and thread compounds, with threads that may be made from nylon, cotton, Kevlar or Corespun.

Standard road tyres/tubulars are usually made with 24 to 55 TPI (thread density). Vittoria tyres and tubulars use casings ranging from 25 to 320 TPI (thread density). Serious riders and racers looking for the best tyre most often choose tyres with a higher TPI.
